Thank you for your interest in becoming part of the Southwick’s Zoo team! We are currently accepting applications for our 2019 season (April 6 – October 31).  Seasonal positions are part-time, and schedules will vary weekly for most positions.

Requirements For All Seasonal Positions

  • Availability: Applicants must be available to work during our normal season (April through October) including weekdays, weekends, holidays unless stated otherwise.
  • All applicants must be at least 16 years of age. Please note that some positions require a minimum age of 18 years.
  • All applicants must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions unless otherwise stated in the job position requirements.
  • All job positions can be assigned additional duties as required by management.

If you worked at Southwick’s Zoo during 2018 and wish to return for the 2019 season, please reapply using the Returning Employee Application. Returning employees DO NOT need to fill out the normal seasonal employee application.

Kiddie Ride Operator/Parking Attendant (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

Employees in this position work with two different departments: Parking and Kiddie Ride Operator.

Parking Attendants direct vehicles to park in appropriate areas, direct traffic as guests cross the street, and keep the parking lot safe and clean.

Kiddie Ride Operators are responsible for operating the mechanical amusement rides within the zoo. They must ensure a safe environment for zoo visitors while providing excellent customer service. Operators board and secure guests, operate rides, enforce zoo safety rules and regulations, and perform additional tasks as required by management.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Per MA law, must submit and pass a CORI check.
  • Weekend availability is a priority.
  • Must be safety conscious and have a strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Must enjoy working with people, particularly children.
  • Must have a positive and upbeat demeanor.
  • Must have strong customer service and communication skills.
  • This position would require regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use both hands, reach with hands and arms, kneel, crouch, or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.

Kiddie Ride Supervisor (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

The Kiddie Ride Supervisor is responsible for achieving operational objectives, customer service satisfaction, and managing the front-line team members in the amusement rides area of Southwick’s Zoo. This position in also responsible for ensuring safety and regulatory compliance. The Kiddie Ride Supervisor is also required to have manager responsibilities if Rides Manager is unavailable.

Availability/Time Commitment: Weekend availability is a priority for this position. Applicants are required to work 5 days a week including one weekend day.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside and direct daily activities of kiddie ride operators.
  • Perform duties of kiddie ride operators as needed/
  • Participate in team member training/
  • Enforce all employee standards of conduct per the employee manual and enforce rules/regulations/
  • Perform daily inspection, testing, and routine maintenance of rides.
  • Recognize and quickly respond to any ride malfunctions/
  • Work with maintenance personnel to identify and implement maintenance activities, preventative maintenance program, and equipment improvement projects/
  • Work with maintenance to ensure regulatory compliance and create a safe environment for guests and team members/

 

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Per MA law, must submit and pass a CORI check.
  • A minimum of one year supervisory/management experience preferred.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to maintain effective communication.
  • Must have dynamic, energetic, and enthusiastic personality and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must be comfortable with people, particularly children.
  • Must be comfortable working with large equipment, mechanical rides, and mechanical parts.
  • This position would require regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, kneel crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.

Skyfari Ride Operator (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

This position includes both operation and maintenance of our Skyfari ride. Skyfari Operators are required to follow proper safety and operational procedures which include loading and unloading riders, responsibly operating the ride, enforcing safety rules, and reporting concerns as they arise.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Per MA law, must submit and pass a CORI check.
  • Must have experience working with machinery and have mechanical knowledge.
  • Must be friendly and comfortable interacting with visitors, including answering questions.
  • Must be safety conscious and have the ability to work quickly and safely with others in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must complete yearly safety training.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to maintain effective communication.
  • This position requires regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.

Zip Line Ride Operator (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

Employees in this position operate our Soaring Eagle Zip Line ride. Zip Line operators are responsible for ensuring the safety of our visitors while providing a fun and exciting experience. Zip Line Operators handle ride payments, assist guests with boarding the ride, ensure that they are safely restrained, operate the ride, and explain and enforce all ride safety rules and regulations.

 

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Per MA law, must submit and pass a CORI check.
  • Must be safety conscious and have strong attention to detail.
  • Must be friendly and comfortable interacting with zoo visitors of all ages.
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years mechanical experience.
  • Prior ride operation experience is preferred, but we are willing to train.
  • This position requires regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.

Train Ride Operator (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

Employees in this position drive our Woodland Express Train. This a rubber tire train which is driven through our North American habitat. Train ride operators are responsible for providing guests with a fun and enjoyable experience while maintaining a safe environment for guests and animals. Responsibilities include driving the train in a safe manner, assisting passengers with boarding and exiting the train, providing information about the zoo and answering visitor questions, and notifying maintenance of any potential mechanical issues.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Per MA law, must submit and pass a CORI check.
  • A valid drivers license is required.
  • Experience with air brakes, tractors, and truck driving is preferred.
  • Must be safety conscious and have strong attention to detail.
  • Must be self-motivated and dependable.
  • Previous mechanical experience is preferred.
  • Must be friendly and comfortable interacting with zoo visitors of all ages.
  • Prior ride operation experience is preferred, but we will train.
  • Position would require regularly sitting, standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.

Admissions Team Member

Overview

Admissions team members assist our visitors with their entry into the zoo. They greet guests as they enter, provide admission rates and information, process ticket sales, scan tickets, and answer visitor questions. Admissions team members are expected to answer questions about all areas of the zoo, direct visitors to different locations within the zoo, resolve customer conflicts, provide guests with information about daily shows, events, zoo rules, and other pertinent information, and ensure that visitors have an overall positive experience. Admissions team members are also expected to keep the zoo’s entrance neat and clean at all times.

 

Requirements

  • Must have strong customer service skills, and must be comfortable interacting with and conversing with all types of guests
  • Must be friendly, courteous, and upbeat.
  • Must have strong communication skills and effectively communicate with guests
  • Strong mathematical skills are preferred
  • Previous cash handling and POS system experience is preferred.

Membership Sales Attendant

Overview

Southwick’s Zoo doesn’t offer memberships, however, EARTH Limited, the education non-profit arm of the zoo, thanks their members with free general admission to our zoo during our normal season.

Membership Sales Attendants are positioned at the zoo’s entrance and process new EARTH memberships and renewals, provide zoo guests with information regarding memberships and EARTH Limited, and perform additional duties as needed.

Availability/Time Commitment: This position has limited openings. Applicants are required to work 3-4 days a week including one weekend day.

 

Requirements

  • Previous experience with a POS terminal is strongly preferred
  • Applicants must be computer literate and have data entry skills
  • Must have strong customer and communication service skills

Food Service Team Member

Overview

Food Service team members work in Southwick’s Zoo’s food and beverage venues. Job duties include food preparation, cooking, cash handling, and cleaning. They are also responsible for maintaining a clean safe work environment that meets health and safety standards. Food Service employees are also expected to answer visitor inquiries about all areas of the zoo.

 

Requirements

  • Must have a friendly demeanor and strong customer service skills
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced and demanding work environment
  • Must have strong communication skills and be able to work in a team environment or independently
  • Position would require regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.

Food Service Supervisor (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

Food Service Supervisors oversee the daily operations of the food and beverage services within Southwick’s Zoo. They ensure the delivery of exceptional service and product, maintain a safe and clean work environment, and provide guidance and support to Food Service Team Members.  Employees in this position manage and monitor product quality and ensure that all food handling, preparation, and storage standards are met, and they ensure compliance with health, safety, sanitation standards to maintain a clean and safe work environment. Supervisors monitor, observe, and assist Food Service Team Members, enforce all employee standards of conduct per the employee manual and enforce rules/regulations, and assist with training team members.

Availability/Time Commitment: Weekend availability is a priority for this position. Applicants are required to work 5 days a week including one weekend day.

Experience/Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have prior experience in a food service position.
  • Must have strong customer service skills and ability to professionally resolve customer conflicts

Landscaping

Overview

Landscaping employees maintain all garden areas within the zoo and assist with planting, watering, fertilizing, and cultivating flowers, shrubs, and trees.

Requirements

  • Must have prior experience with gardening/landscaping including familiarity with the methods, tools, and equipment associated with the job
  • Must be able to work quickly and efficiently
  • Position requires regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds.

Animal Care Positions

Zookeeper – Hoofstock Department

As New England’s largest zoo, Southwick’s Zoo is home to more than 850 animals representing over 150 different species. Southwick’s offers an exciting environment for visitors to learn more about animals and their conservation. The educational programs offered at the zoo, as well as those offered to the larger local community, are provided by EARTH Ltd, an environmental education non-profit located at Southwick’s Zoo and based out of the EARTH Discovery Center.

Zookeeper – Hoofstock Department

Southwick’s Zoo is currently accepting applications for a part-time Zookeeper in our Hoofstock Department. This position works alongside other zookeepers in the Hoofstock Department, and reports to the Head Hoofstock Zookeeper. In addition to the zookeeping duties listed below, this position will likely also include one day each week helping with landscaping around the zoo.

Work schedule will be four to five days a week (specific days not yet determined), approximately 40 hours a week. This position is seasonal, to start as soon as possible and go through the end of October. Pay rate is $12/hr (state minimum wage).

Essential Functions

  • Assist in daily care and husbandry.
  • Assist in the creation and implementation of enrichment.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Ensure safety of zoo visitors, zoo staff, and animals.
  • Assist in managing and supervising interns.
  • Help with upkeep of zoo grounds, including occasional collecting of trash bags at the end of the work day.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience Required

  • Previous experience caring for animals required; previous experience working with hoofstock and/or large carnivores preferred
  • College degree in biological sciences, psychology, or related field preferred
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must work well independently, but also as a team player
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast paced and loud environment
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time, work inside and outdoors in any weather, and be able to lift and carry 50 lbs
  • Must be able to crawl, climb, and reach to clean low and “awkward” areas
  • Must be able to be in close proximity to hay and shavings and other possible allergens, such as: dust, mold, and grass
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
