Thank you for your interest in becoming part of the Southwick’s Zoo team.  We are currently accepting applications for part-time seasonal positions for our 2020 season. The 2020 zoo season will run from April 11 to October 31.

Seasonal Positions

Requirements For All Seasonal Positions

Seasonal positions are part-time, and schedules will vary weekly for most positions.

Please review the position descriptions below before completing your application to determine which position you are best suited for. In accordance with Massachusetts child labor laws, please no applicants under 16 years of age.

  • Availability: Applicants must be available to work during our normal season (April through October) including weekdays, weekends, holidays unless stated otherwise.
  • All applicants must be at least 16 years of age. Please note that some positions require a minimum age of 18 years.
  • All applicants must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions unless otherwise stated in the job position requirements.
  • All job positions can be assigned additional duties as required by management.

If you worked at Southwick’s Zoo during 2019 and wish to return for the 2020 season, please reapply using the Returning Employee Application. Returning employees DO NOT need to fill out the normal seasonal employee application.

Parking Attendant/Sanitation

Overview

Parking attendants assist guests with parking their vehicles in a safe and organized manner. Job responsibilities include directing vehicles (including school buses) to park in the appropriate areas, directing traffic as guests cross the street, maintaining a safe environment for both drivers and pedestrians, keeping parking lots clean and free of litter, and assisting in other areas of the zoo as needed. Employees in this position may also assist with collecting trash and emptying recycling receptacles within the park.

Requirements

  • Weekend availability is a priority.
  • Must have a valid drivers license in good standing.
  • Must be safety conscious and have a strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Must have a positive and upbeat demeanor.
  • Must have strong customer service and communication skills.
  • This position would require regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use both hands, reach with hands and arms, kneel, crouch, or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.
  • Must be comfortable working outdoors and in the sun for extended periods of time.
  • This is a high energy position and requires the ability to move quickly.

Parking Supervisor (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

The parking supervisor will oversee parking lot attendants and all parking areas with an emphasis on safety, communication, and efficiency. This position is a seasonal position/

Parking supervisor will also be required to take shifts as a parking attendant in a supervisory role. They will assist guests with parking their vehicles in a safe and organized manner. Job responsibilities include assiting with scheduling, schedule changes, shift coverage, staff management, time management, parking lot set-up, parking lot maintenance and supply management, directing vehicles (including school buses) to park in the appropriate areas, directing traffic as guests cross the street, maintaining a safe environment for both drivers and pedestrians, keeping parking lots clean and free of litter, and assisting in other areas of the zoo as needed. Salary based on experience.

 Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age with a drivers license for at least 2 years.
  • Weekend and night availability is a priority.
  • Must have experience in the parking industry.
  • Must be safety conscious and have a strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Must have a positive and upbeat demeanor.
  • Must have strong customer service and communication skills.
  • This position would require regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use both hands, reach with hands and arms, kneel, crouch, or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.
  • Must be comfortable working outdoors and in the sun for extended periods of time.

Kiddie Ride Operator (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

Kiddie Ride Operators are responsible for operating the mechanical amusement rides within the zoo. They must ensure a safe environment for zoo visitors while providing excellent customer service. Operators board and secure guests, operate rides, enforce zoo safety rules and regulations, and perform additional tasks as required by management. May also assist with parking as needed.

  • Per MA law, must submit and pass a CORI check.
  • Weekend availability is a priority.
  • Must be safety conscious and have a strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Must enjoy working with people, particularly children.
  • Must have a positive and upbeat demeanor.
  • Must have strong customer service and communication skills.
  • This position would require regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use both hands, reach with hands and arms, kneel, crouch, or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.

Kiddie Ride Supervisor (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

The Kiddie Ride Supervisor is responsible for achieving operational objectives, customer service satisfaction, and managing the front-line team members in the amusement rides area of Southwick’s Zoo. This position in also responsible for ensuring safety and regulatory compliance. The Kiddie Ride Supervisor is also required to have manager responsibilities if Rides Manager is unavailable.

Availability/Time Commitment: Weekend availability is a priority for this position. Applicants are required to work 5 days a week including one weekend day.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside and direct daily activities of kiddie ride operators.
  • Perform duties of kiddie ride operators as needed/
  • Participate in team member training/
  • Enforce all employee standards of conduct per the employee manual and enforce rules/regulations/
  • Perform daily inspection, testing, and routine maintenance of rides.
  • Recognize and quickly respond to any ride malfunctions/
  • Work with maintenance personnel to identify and implement maintenance activities, preventative maintenance program, and equipment improvement projects/
  • Work with maintenance to ensure regulatory compliance and create a safe environment for guests and team members/

 

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Per MA law, must submit and pass a CORI check.
  • A minimum of one year supervisory/management experience preferred.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to maintain effective communication.
  • Must have dynamic, energetic, and enthusiastic personality and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must be comfortable with people, particularly children.
  • Must be comfortable working with large equipment, mechanical rides, and mechanical parts.
  • This position would require regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, kneel crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.

Skyfari Ride Operator (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

This position includes both operation and maintenance of our Skyfari ride. Skyfari Operators are required to follow proper safety and operational procedures which include loading and unloading riders, responsibly operating the ride, enforcing safety rules, and reporting concerns as they arise.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Per MA law, must submit and pass a CORI check.
  • Must have experience working with machinery and have mechanical knowledge.
  • Must be friendly and comfortable interacting with visitors, including answering questions.
  • Must be safety conscious and have the ability to work quickly and safely with others in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must complete yearly safety training.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to maintain effective communication.
  • This position requires regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.

Zip Line Ride Operator (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

Employees in this position operate our Soaring Eagle Zip Line ride. Zip Line operators are responsible for ensuring the safety of our visitors while providing a fun and exciting experience. Zip Line Operators handle ride payments, assist guests with boarding the ride, ensure that they are safely restrained, operate the ride, and explain and enforce all ride safety rules and regulations.

 Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Per MA law, must submit and pass a CORI check.
  • Must be safety conscious and have strong attention to detail.
  • Must be friendly and comfortable interacting with zoo visitors of all ages.
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years mechanical experience.
  • Prior ride operation experience is preferred, but we are willing to train.
  • This position requires regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.

Train Ride Operator (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

Employees in this position drive our Woodland Express Train. This a rubber tire train which is driven through our North American habitat. Train ride operators are responsible for providing guests with a fun and enjoyable experience while maintaining a safe environment for guests and animals. Responsibilities include driving the train in a safe manner, assisting passengers with boarding and exiting the train, providing information about the zoo and answering visitor questions, and notifying maintenance of any potential mechanical issues.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Per MA law, must submit and pass a CORI check.
  • A valid drivers license is required.
  • Experience with air brakes, tractors, and truck driving is preferred.
  • Must be safety conscious and have strong attention to detail.
  • Must be self-motivated and dependable.
  • Previous mechanical experience is preferred.
  • Must be friendly and comfortable interacting with zoo visitors of all ages.
  • Prior ride operation experience is preferred, but we will train.
  • Position would require regularly sitting, standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.

Retail and Attractions Team Member

Overview

Retail and Attraction Team Members work in the gift shops, ride ticket sales booths, and the Elkhorn Mine and Rainforest Adventure Maze attractions. They provide our guests with excellent customer service as they assist with their purchases. While working at the attractions, attendants are responsible for creating fun and memorable experiences while ensuring the safety of our visitors. Responsibilities include handling cash, operating POS terminal, keeping work area clean and organized, stocking and displaying merchandise, and answering visitor questions.

 Requirements

  • Must have strong customer service skills and enjoy conversing with customers.
  • Must have friendly and positive personality
  • Must be able to work as a team or independently.
  • Must have strong communication skills and be able to work in a team environment.
  • Position requires regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 20 pounds.

Retail Supervisor (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

The Retail Supervisor is responsible for achieving operational objectives, customer service satisfaction, and managing the front-line team members in retail locations throughout Southwick’s Zoo. Responsibility include working alongside and directing daily activities of retail personnel and performing duties as needed as a Retail Team Member. The Retail Supervisor must also participate in team member training and enforce all employee standards of conduct per the employee manual and rules/regulations. Retail Supervisors are also required to have manager responsibilities in the event the Manager is unavailable.

Availability/Time Commitment: Weekend availability is a priority for this position. Applicants are required to work 5 days a week including one weekend day

Admissions Team Member

Overview

Admissions team members assist our visitors with their entry into the zoo. They greet guests as they enter, provide admission rates and information, process ticket sales, scan tickets, and answer visitor questions. Admissions team members are expected to answer questions about all areas of the zoo, direct visitors to different locations within the zoo, resolve customer conflicts, provide guests with information about daily shows, events, zoo rules, and other pertinent information, and ensure that visitors have an overall positive experience. Admissions team members are also expected to keep the zoo’s entrance neat and clean at all times.

 Requirements

  • Must have strong customer service skills, and must be comfortable interacting with and conversing with all types of guests
  • Must be friendly, courteous, and upbeat.
  • Must have strong communication skills and effectively communicate with guests
  • Strong mathematical skills are preferred
  • Previous cash handling and POS system experience is preferred.

Admissions Supervisor (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

The Admissions Supervisor is responsible for achieving operational objectives, customer service satisfaction, and managing the front-line team members in the admissions department. Employees in this position work alongside and direct daily activities of Admission Team Members, and perform duties as needed as an Admission Team Member. Additional responsibilities include participating in team member training , enforcing all employee standards of conduct per the employee manual, and enforcing rules/regulations. Admissions Supervisors have manager responsibilities in the event the Manager is unavailable.

Availability/Time Commitment: Weekend availability is a priority for this position. Applicants are required to work 5 days a week including one weekend day.

Food Service Team Member

Overview

Food Service team members work in Southwick’s Zoo’s food and beverage venues. Job duties include food preparation, cooking, cash handling, and cleaning. They are also responsible for maintaining a clean safe work environment that meets health and safety standards. Food Service employees are also expected to answer visitor inquiries about all areas of the zoo.

 

Requirements

  • Must have a friendly demeanor and strong customer service skills
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced and demanding work environment
  • Must have strong communication skills and be able to work in a team environment or independently
  • Position would require regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.

Food Service Supervisor (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

Food Service Supervisors oversee the daily operations of the food and beverage services within Southwick’s Zoo. They ensure the delivery of exceptional service and product, maintain a safe and clean work environment, and provide guidance and support to Food Service Team Members.  Employees in this position manage and monitor product quality and ensure that all food handling, preparation, and storage standards are met, and they ensure compliance with health, safety, sanitation standards to maintain a clean and safe work environment. Supervisors monitor, observe, and assist Food Service Team Members, enforce all employee standards of conduct per the employee manual and enforce rules/regulations, and assist with training team members.

Availability/Time Commitment: Weekend availability is a priority for this position. Applicants are required to work 5 days a week including weekends.

Experience/Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have prior experience in a food service position.
  • Must have strong customer service skills and ability to professionally resolve customer conflicts
  • Must have experience operating a POS system and handling cash
  • Must be highly motivated and goal oriented
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced work environment and able to multi-task
  • Must have strong problem-solving skills and ability to identify and address issues quickly and accordingly

Pony Ride Attendant (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

Pony Ride Attendants assist with the zoo’s pony ride attraction. Attendants are responsible for lifting children onto the saddle, explaining and enforcing ride rules, and keeping the pony ride area clean. Attendants are expected to help maintain a safe environment for both the visitors and the animals.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Prior experience with horses is preferred.
  • Must be comfortable interacting with children and adults.
  • Must be friendly and polite with strong customer service skills.
  • Must be comfortable working outdoors and able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to be in close proximity to hay and shavings and other possible allergens, such as hay and alfalfa.
  • Position requires regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds.

Petting Zoo Attendant (Applicants must be 18+)

Petting zoo attendants assist with the cleaning of our petting zoo area and with the feeding of our petting zoo animals. Petting Zoo attendants also interact with and educate our visitors. Attendants are expected to learn and enforce all petting zoo rules in order to maintain a safe environment for both visitors and the animals.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Prior experience with goats is preferred.
  • Must be comfortable interacting with children and adults.
  • Must be friendly and polite with strong customer service skills.
  • Must be able to be in close proximity to hay and shavings and other possible allergens, such as hay and alfalfa.
  • Position requires regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds.

Parakeet Landing Attendant (Applicants must be 18+)

Overview

Parakeet Landing Attendants work in our walk-through aviary, Parakeet Landing. Attendants monitor and control the flow of visitors into the aviary and maintain a safe environment for both visitors and the birds. Other responsibilities include making and selling seed sticks and cleaning the aviary.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Prior experience with birds is preferred.
  • Must be comfortable interacting with children and adults.
  • Must be friendly and polite with strong customer service skills.
  • Position would require regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, and be able to lift or move up to 20 pounds.

Landscaping

Overview

Landscaping employees maintain all garden areas within the zoo and assist with planting, watering, fertilizing, and cultivating flowers, shrubs, and trees.

Requirements

  • Must have prior experience with gardening/landscaping including familiarity with the methods, tools, and equipment associated with the job
  • Must be able to work quickly and efficiently
  • Position requires regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds.
