Interesting Facts

  • Umbrella Cockatoos are named for their crest of feathers which fans out like an umbrella when open. The crest is used in visual display for communication.
  •  Like other parrot species, cockatoos have zygodactyl feet. This means that each foot has two toes facing forwards and two toes facing backwards. This type of foot helps them to grasp objects and climb.
  • Cockatoos are known for being very loud. They are often considered the loudest of the parrots, and often scream to communicate over long distances.

Threats

Wild cockatoo numbers are decreasing due to loss of habitat to logging and mining. Another major threat is the illegal pet trade.
