Interesting Facts

• Military macaws are found in Central America and South America. They are sometimes confused with the Great Green Macaw which has a similar appearance. Great green macaws can be distinguished by their larger size.
• Macaws are zygodactyls, meaning that they have four toes. Two toes point forwards and two point backwards. This type of foot helps the macaw to climb and grasp objects.
• Their name comes from their mostly green plumage which is resembles the color of military uniforms. Their green coloration provides camouflage in their forest habitat.

Conservation Status

Threats

Habitat loss and the pet trade are the two major threats to this species. Much of their habitat has been lost to agriculture and human encroachment.
