Interesting Facts
Emus are the world's third heaviest bird. They live in the shrublands and grasslands of southeastern Australia. Although unable to fly, emus are very fast runners and can reach a speed of 31 mph.
Female emus are slightly larger than males and make different vocalizations. Females can inflate a sac in their neck to make a booming noise than can be heard from over a mile away. Males can only make grunting noises.
Emus have very good eyesight and hearing. This can help them detect nearby predators such as eagles or dingos.
Emus are members of the ratite family. Ratites are flightless, running birds and are considered the most primitive of modern birds.
