Docents do a lot of walking and standing. Typical time on a station can be 2 hours. Can you handle standing or walking for up to 2 hours at a time?
Docents sometimes carry artifacts or related material – weighing up to 20lbs. Can you carry 20lbs for a short period of time?
Docents are “the answer people” at the zoo. They are stopped any time by zoo guests for directions, questions about the animals, etc. Will you be able to use information you learn in class to quickly and accurately answer questions from people of all ages and backgrounds?

Availability

The Docent Manager oversees the daily operations of the docent department while also serving in an active docent role. This position is responsible for recruiting, training, scheduling, supervising, and supporting the ongoing development of volunteer docents. The Manager ensures all educational messaging, materials, and animal interactions are accurate, up to date, and aligned with Southwick’s Zoo standards. This role requires a minimum commitment of one weekend day per week, in addition to scheduled weekday availability.
