Interesting Facts
African crowned cranes form monogamous pairs remaining together for their entire life. Adult cranes reinforce their paired bonds by dancing for and with each other. Outside of the breeding season, pairs will often come together to form flocks.
Crowned cranes are opportunistic omnivores and will eat grasses, lizards, insects, and small mammals. They are often seen stomping on the ground to stir up insects.
African crowned cranes are well known for their elaborate displays. Their extravagant dances often include bowing, leaping, and spreading their wings.
