UPDATE: Dolly is still doing well, and now spends time outdoors! Zoo visitors can view her at the giraffe habitat, weather permitting. She is generally outside until about 4pm.

We are excited to announce the birth a female giraffe! Dolly was 6 feet tall at the time of her birth on July 21st, so she is the largest female baby giraffe ever born at Southwick’s Zoo.

Dolly’s mother, Molly, did not produce a sufficient amount of milk, so Dolly is currently being bottle fed. Giraffes are not born with an immune system, so it is very important that they ingest colostrum within a few hours of birth. Colostrum is the nutrient-rich milk produced by the mother immediately after delivery.

We are hoping to reintroduce her to the herd in a few weeks, so keep an eye out for updates!
