In order to have the best possible zoo visit, you should prepare ahead of time! Here is a handy checklist of things you may want to bring with you and items you cannot bring into the zoo:
Comfortable Shoes
We strongly suggest wearing shoes that are comfortable to walk in. Southwick’s Zoo is situated on natural terrain and encompasses over 175 acres. There is a lot of walking up and downhill, so wear appropriate footwear.
Camera and Film/Batteries
However, don’t worry if you do forget yours… we sell cameras, film, and batteries at the Purple Peacock Gift Shop within the Zoo.
Sunscreen, Sunglasses, Hat/Insect Repellant
While much of the zoo is covered by shade, you still want protection from the sun. We are also situated very close to the woods, so you want to bring insect repellent.
Stroller
The Zoo does offers rentals of Strollers, Wagons and Wheelchairs, but quantities are limited. You can call admissions to reserve at: 1-800-258-9182 ext 204
Water
It can get very hot in this area during the Summer time, and we are a large zoo which means lots of walking. Bring a water bottle so you do not become dehydrated during your visit. We also have water and other beverages available for sale in various locations within the zoo.
Food
We do allow outside food, and there are numerous picnic tables throughout the zoo. However, if you find yourself hungry, Southwick’s Zoo provides food venues that offer a number delicious choices. We offer a wide variety food including pizza, burgers, salads, specialty hotdogs, ice cream, assorted snacks, and much more! We also now have a full service restaurant that is open year-round. *Please be aware that most food venues are weather dependent and may not be open on rainy or cold days. Please call us in advance at 800-258-9182 to find out what will be open the day of your visit.
What NOT to Bring:
Food for the Animals
All of our animals in the Zoo are on special diets. It is harmful and illegal to bring food for animal consumption, per USDA regulations. Feeding of the animals is ONLY allowed in the petting zoo and in the deer forest and ONLY with food provided at the zoo.
Pets
Pets of any kind are prohibited from the zoo for reasons of health and safety. Pets are also not to be left in cars in the parking lot. NOTE: Service animals are allowed if necessary. HOWEVER, service animals are not allowed in the Deer Forest or Petting Zoo. We also ask that you DO NOT bring them near certain habitats: the chimpanzees, tigers, lions, leopards, or cheetahs.
Grills/Camp Stoves
These are a safety hazard an are not allowed on zoo grounds.
Bicycles, Skateboards, Roller blades, etc.
Sorry, we do not allow bikes, skateboards, roller-skates, roller blades, pedal toys, and similar items in the zoo. They can be a safety hazard to children and other visitors.
